Balmir is a New York City-based dance school, cultural programming organization, and production company that uses movement, music, and shared experiences to educate, engage, and connect communities.
Through performances, educational programming, social dance experiences, and community-centered events, we bring people together across cultures, generations, and backgrounds.
From classrooms and museums to community spaces and performance stages, Balmir creates opportunities for people of all ages to experience the power of movement, culture, and human connection.
Founded in May of 2011 by Eric Balmir, as Balmir Latin Dance Studio, Balmir Dance remains home of World Dance Champions and ever-evolving artists. Composed of performers and world-class instructors from varying dance backgrounds and ethnicities, they have come together to form some of the most recognizable teams in NYC and around the world. Balmir Latin Dance Company has been internationally acclaimed as one of NYC’s top dance schools. Balmir's dance teams have participated in Salsa Congresses and dance festivals in Rome, Peru, Punta Cana, Toronto, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, just to name a few, and many others across the United States. In 2016, Balmir Dance Company was featured on award winning news program, PIX11 morning news, and at the People En Español Festival, representing the New York International Salsa Congress, New York City's largest and longest-running Latin dance and music event. In May of 2017, BLDC dancers were honored to be part of Robin Hood’s Annual Benefit in NYC, by entertaining its influential crowd, among many other exclusive artists.
Our Story
In September of 2018, Balmir Dance was acquired by Artist and Instructor Jessica J. Silva. She continued the company's culture and vision. With a group of highly talented and motivated instructors, Balmir Dance offers a wide variety of classes for students of all ages and all levels including Salsa, Bachata, Afro, Kizomba, Hustle, Cha Cha Cha, Pole Dance and much more. International & local instructors offer professional and performance level training. Students range from absolute beginners, to advanced, to competition-ready performers.
The studio’s community-focus represents the diversity of New York, encouraging people from all walks of life to learn to dance and elevate their souls. Currently, Balmir Dance hosts a seasonal free after-work Salsa dance party for the public at the Brooklyn Museum thanks to its partnership with the Brooklyn Museum of New York.
About JESSICA J. SILVA
Creative Director | Cultural Programming Producer | Choreographer & Instructor
Jessica Silva is a New York City-based cultural programming producer, choreographer, instructor, and creative director dedicated to creating meaningful experiences through movement, music, and human connection.
As the Creative Director of Balmir, Jessica develops and produces educational programs, performances, community activations, and cultural experiences that engage audiences across schools, museums, community organizations, and public spaces throughout New York City.
With more than a decade of experience in dance education, event production, and community engagement, her work is rooted in the belief that movement is more than performance—it is a powerful tool for connection, cultural celebration, and collective experience.
Jessica is the producer and host of the Brooklyn Museum Salsa Party series and has collaborated with schools, cultural institutions, community organizations, and event partners to create accessible experiences that invite participation from people of all ages and backgrounds.
Drawing inspiration from Afro-Latin social dance traditions, her work explores how movement can foster presence, belonging, and authentic human connection. Whether producing a cultural assembly, facilitating a community dance experience, or choreographing a performance, she is committed to creating spaces where people feel welcomed, engaged, and inspired.
Through Balmir, Jessica continues to bridge education, culture, and the performing arts by designing experiences that celebrate movement as a universal language capable of bringing people together.
